I love sushi and really want to get it to a fine art- watch this space! Ernst and i went to China Town to get the ingredients- we went into a shop where nobody could speak English and it took a while to find everything we needed...

Wasabi!
Known as Japanese horseradish, its root is used as a spice and has an extremely strong flavor. Its hotness is more akin to that of a hot mustard than a chili pepper, producing vapors that burn the nasal passages rather than the tongue. Wasabi from China Town is much stronger than Wasabi from a supermarket!!
Salmon, carrot and red pepper sushi rolls
You may notice that the rice is slightly brown- no, it's not brown-rice sushi- although that's probably quite a good idea? It's brown because we didn't have any rice vinegar, so Ernst improvised with balsamic vinegar...
Roll mat
Sushi is made by rolling the ingredients up using a bamboo mat and then squeezing everything together- the rice is very sticky which keeps it all in place.
Chinese food buffet in dodgy restaurant
We had lunch with some friends after church on Sunday in China Town (before getting our sushi ingredients) It was all you can eat for £4.90- Ernst had 4 plates of food. Standing in the buffet queue was like being back at hostel :o)
London Underground
This is where we get off the tube for work everyday. The tube is always very crowded in the morning- it's warm, stuffy and uncomfortable. Reading your news paper is a luxury- you often don't get that much personal space. I fainted last Monday morning...

New Oxford Street at night
I took the next few pictures as i stepped out of the office at 5:30 pm today. New Oxford Street captures the throb of London. This experiment of light and colour reminds me of Monet's waterlilies (weird, i know)

Do it yourself
There's no one to pack your shopping bags for you in the UK, you pack your own shopping. It's taken 2 years for me to get into the habit of doing this (holidays back home don't help!)
Food shopping 16:00
Our weekly food shop to Sainsbury's- please note the ouma trollie! This was Ernst's idea to make it easier to carry everything home- we all laughed at him the first time he produced it-but it's worth it's weight in gold!
Ro & Micheal
Ernst and i went to a very British pub for supper with Ro and Michael on Sunday evening. We spent the evening planning our holiday away together later this year...
Winter in the forest
Ro and i went for a walk in the Epping Forrest on Sunday. The rain had made big muddy puddles everywhere. I got so excited about this branch of holly with its little bright red berries.
Spring in the winter
I took this picture last Sunday, 14th January, the middle of winter, yet these little crocus flowers are in full bloom. They are growing along the garden path leading to our front door and look so cheerful and resilient against the bare winter garden.
Freedom
I'm always looking for interesting arty snaps- i love the simplicity of this picture, it reminds me of one of my favourite artists
