The guide books say that people speak English in Hong Kong- we've found the opposite to be true. Especially where we live- which is a bit out of the main cities. We get lots of blank stares and shrugs. Ernst started learning Mandarin before we left home, in preparation for our trip- only to find out that people only understand Cantonese in these parts! So he's started learning Cantonese now- bless... love his ambition... i'm also trying, just less enthusiastically. It's really isolating not speaking the same language as those around you- I'm really learning compassion for foreigners.
